of Fancy Gala an extraordinary environmental fundraising event in support
of our zoo and gardens.
Inspired by the glorious birds who take flight across the desert skies, the Gala
captured our wondrous winged creatures; from the tiniest hummingbirds to majestic
golden eagles, a myriad of colorful creatures flew west for this very special
evening. Held on-site and co-chaired by Gene and Billie Yeager, the event
featured an enormous tent transformed into a spectacular virtual aviary with
16-foot palms lining the tent walls, stage pitched with mossy hillsides, two
waterfalls, and exquisite centerpieces featuring silk birds, acacia-inspired
trees, and spring flowers. Guests experienced the culinary creativity of
the Patina Group; the smooth jazz sounds of Roger Neumann’s jazz ensemble;
a exceptional film celebrating Living Desert birds and a special visit from “Treasure",
our thick-billed parrot; a remarkable presentation by Tracks in the Sand conservation
award recipient Mr. Russell A. Mittermeier, President of Conservation International,
and an incredible live
and silent auction, featuring an 5-star Alaskan Cruise courtesy of our friends
at Regent Seven Sea Cruises and Alaska Airlines. The Flights of Fancy Gala
grossed over $600,000 in support of The Living Desert’s conservation efforts.
